11 Steps On How To Start a Blog

Nowadays, it is easy to start a blog. Just follow these steps and you’ll have your new blog up and running in minutes.

  1. Pick a topic for your blog. This could be anything from “What I did today” through to a hobby or interest. Or it could be a subject that you want to make some money from.
  2. Choose a web hosting service for your blog. If your blog is a personal one, you may decide to use a free service like Blogger. But if you care about your blog (and you should do!) then it’s much better to spend a few dollars on a domain name and some web hosting space to host your blog. You get much more control this way and in a few months time, you’ll be glad you took this route.
  3. Choose a blog design template. You don’t want your blog to look the same as thousands of other blogs out there. Spend a bit of time tracking down a design template for your blog that will look professional.
  4. Configure the other settings on your blog. If you’re using WordPress (which is highly recommended) then there are quite a few settings that you will need to tweak to get the best performance from your blog.
  5. Put a system in place to deal with comment spam. As soon as your blog gets indexed, the spammers will find it. Akismet comes with the default WordPress installation but you need to activate it before you can use it – do it!
  6. Change your permalinks. The standard WordPress permalinks (the URL that displays in your browser’s address bar) are ugly. Take a few seconds to change them.
  7. Check your ping settings. Make sure that your blog pings or notifies the major blog search engines so they will know that you exist.
  8. Write your first blog post. It doesn’t have to be anything special but it needs to be done. You can make this a simple introduction to what you will be talking about. You don’t have to write an essay for your blog posts, two or three paragraphs will do fine.
  9. If your blog doesn’t set up an RSS feed automatically, set this up.
  10. Use sites like StumbleUpon and Digg to promote your new blog.
  11. Use press releases and articles to promote your new blog.
